Whisky Jewbilee

As reported in the New York Times this week:

For avid whiskey lovers, few events are more eagerly anticipated than WhiskyFest, an enormous tasting that touches down in several American cities throughout the year. But when sponsors of the New York festival suddenly moved it last year from Tuesday to Friday and Saturday, many regulars were unable to attend.

An alternative arrived suddenly in the form of a new one-night event, held on the eve of WhiskyFest. Despite little time to advertise, it drew a crowd of 250 to its unlikely Manhattan location: the West Side Institutional Synagogue.

These whiskey devotees, it turned out, were Jews shut out of the big event because they observe the Sabbath. And to drive home the point of the tasting, its founder, the fledgling Jewish Whisky Company, called it Whisky Jewbilee.

Read all about the Whisky Jewbilee including quotes from Royal Wine’s wine and spirits educator, Shlomo Blashka.

Great News about Frozen Grapes!

In our quest to find the best of the best designer ice cubes, we came upon this fabulous, fabulous idea for frozen grapes. No work, and your guests will love this. WOW! Simply wash, dry and freeze seedless red or green grapes. When available, we prefer organic.  Select a bottle of medium dry or dry red wine, such as a Merlot, a Syrah or a Cab and drop in the frozen red or black grapes.  Or, for a white wine, use frozen green grapes.

Ladders to Heaven by Rachel Willen

Congratulations to the talented Chef Rachel Willen for publishing her first novel, Ladders to Heaven. We have recently featured Rachel as our guest food columnist, and then she amazed us by sharing news of the publication of her new book, a fictional work about friendships, family dynamics and struggles of 1990's Jewish life in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

The novel has been compared to Katterskill Falls, The Red Tent and The Ladies Auxiliary in content – which is at times a bit racy. The book's protaganists face the challenges and questions relating to their community, their daily lives and the religious ideals which surround them. The story is both critical and supportive of life in Crown Heights.

But, please be aware, that the author does explore the characters in an explicit, somewhat risqué way – touching on topics including love, gender, faith, abuse, rascism and the conflicts of secular and religious worlds. If this is a genre you would enjoy, it is a page-turner.

Napa_Green

Congratulations to Ernie Weir, Aine Kelly and the Hagafen Cellars team for being proclaimed an official Napa Green Certified Winery.

This voluntary program is focused on independently certified, environmentally sound farming and production methods that meet and exceed more than twenty local, state and federal "best practices." Napa Valley vintners and growers develop farm-specific plans tailored to protect and enhance the ecological quality of the region, or create production facility programs that reduce energy and water use, waste and pollution. The Napa Green programs are open to all Napa County vintners and grape growers.

Rodent Infestation at Kosher Food Warehouse in Queens

The mission of KosherEye is to make our readers aware of trends and developments related to the kosher culinary world. Sometimes this is difficult to report – because the news may not be positive. We feel that we are obligated to share the following story that broke last week about a product many of us have in our pantries - KoJel.

Inspectors from the Food and Drug Administration seized more than $1 million worth of foodstuff after finding widespread rodent infestation in a Ridgewood, Queens warehouse. The company previously had been notified multiple times to correct the situation.

Among other publications, this disturbing story was reported in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal Online and The New York Post. KoJel is manufactured by V.I.P Foods. In addition to KoJel, V. I. P. Foods produces instant pudding, hot chocolate mix and instant noodle soup.
